Street children in Kaliningrad
In Russian Kaliningrad, the former German town of Königsberg, there is not much left from the proud times when philosopher Immanuel Kant lived there. With an estimated unemployment rate of 70% and no foreign investments it more closely resembles a Third World metropolis. And just like in the Third World many children and juveniles in Kaliningrad live on the streets – many of them due to neglect by their parents. In a city which is terribly cold in winter the street kids are happy to find an old carpet to protect them in the night. During the day they live from begging or minor robberies, mostly near the central market.
